If you're a regular reader of All She Cooks, you're probably sensing a pattern here. I have dough on the brain. Danish dough, pizza dough, calzone dough, and dough for bread sticks. One of these days I will make bread dough. But, for now I'm satisfied playing with this pizza dough.

This is a yeast dough recipe, but don't be scared. It's super easy, and I don't say that lightly.

How Pizza Dough is Made:

  • Throw everything in your mixing bowl. Hopefully you have a mixer with a dough hook. If not, you're in for a bit of kneading.
  • Set the mixer on medium speed and let the mixer do it's work.
  • When the dough is in a nice ball (or maybe two... mine does that sometimes), you can turn the mixer off. It'll look something like this:

Moisten a towel with warm water and cover bowl. Let it sit for one hour.

As the dough sits, it will double in size. This recipe makes enough dough for 2 pizzas, 2 calzones, or a bunch of bread sticks. If you want to just make a small pizza, or a personal calzone, go for it. Tear off a chunk of the dough and refrigerate the rest and use within a couple days.

The dough is ready to be rolled, pressed, or stretched into whatever shape you want to make it.

Remember, simple ingredients all thrown in one mixing bowl make this easy pizza dough one to add to your binder of basic recipes. You will use this over and over again, as a base for a variety of meals including pizzas and calzones.

Great (and simple) recipe! If you have a bread machine, you can do the same thing (just put it on the dough setting) and you're golden as well. I know that bread machines are not exactly "in" these days, but I'm loving mine!

This is simpler than mine. I usually let the yeast sit in the warm water for a while before throwing it all together. I do have a mixer, but I guess I'm old fashion or just love kneading. There's something very Zen about it. 🙂 I'll have to try this. Looks good!

I can see how it would be Zen... I just don't have the patience! 😉 I guess that's not very Zen of me. Normally, when I'm in the kitchen I'm working on several things at the same time, so being able to throw the ingredients for this dough in the mixer and walk away and let the mixer finish the job is so ideal for me.

I just made this dough, it's sitting on my counter rising waiting for dinner tonight!! But I was wondering if you have ever froze this dough? Just curious if I could make a few batches and freeze them for use another day. Thanks! -Jen

Hi Jennifer! I have not tried freezing it, but I keep meaning too. I sometimes double the batch and put half of it in the refrigerator and use it for mini-pizzas or calzones for lunch or snack over the next few days. It refrigerates beautifully. If you decide to freeze some, I'd love to hear how it works out for you.

Did you use rapid rise yeast or "regular" yeast for this recipe?

    Reply

    • Jessica

Hi Robyn- I normally use rapid rise, but I've used the regular yeast packets too. Because I let it sit and rise for a good hour, it would work with either.

What temp and how long did you cook it for ?

    • Jessica McCoy

Hello Amberley- sorry for the delay in getting back to you on cook time for our Easy Pizza Dough recipe. You'll find that about 17-19 minutes in a 425 degree oven should do the trick for most pizza toppings. You can poke little holes in the crust with a fork and then stick it in the oven for a few minutes prior to adding toppings if you'd like- that will give you a little bit of a crisper pizza dough. Delicious!

Do you cook pizza dough before adding ingredients? ›

If you're baking the pizza in the oven, whether on a pizza stone or not, I always pre-bake the dough for 4-5 minutes before adding toppings, to make sure the pizza dough cooks crisp on the outside and soft and airy in the middle. Once you add the Pizza Sauce and toppings, return it to the oven to finish baking.

What is the most important ingredient in pizza dough? ›

Flour is the main ingredient in pizza dough, and the type you use can have a big effect on the end result. All-purpose flour will work fine, but if you want a chewier crumb and a better hole structure, you should consider buying yourself some high protein bread flour.

What flour is best for pizza dough? ›

The best flour for making Deep-Dish Pizza Dough is all-purpose flour. In bakeries and pizzerias, Pizza Flour is often used because it is a high-protein flour that produces a light and airy crust. However, all-purpose flour will also work well for Deep-Dish Pizza Dough.

Should you poke holes in pizza dough? ›

Yes! It's a technique called “docking” pastry, and it helps let steam escape the crust when baking so that it doesn't puff up.

What happens if you don t let pizza dough rise before you cook it? ›

If you don't let pizza dough rise, then it will not be able to trap the air bubbles that make for a light and airy crust. This will result in flat and dense bread that won't have much flavor or texture.

Should pizza dough sit out before cooking? ›

For best results when using prepared pizza dough, let the dough rest at room temperature in the bag or covered, until it has risen a little, and then try to stretch it out.

How long should pizza dough sit before using? ›

Before you begin stretching, warm up your cold dough for at least 30 minutes at room temperature. Gluten, the protein that makes pizza dough chewy, is tighter in cold conditions like the fridge, which is why cold pizza dough will stretch out and snap back just like a rubber band.

Can you put too much yeast in pizza dough? ›

Too little yeast and your dough won't rise enough, and the pizza base will taste bland. Use too much yeast and your dough may over-ferment. Tell-tale signs are your dough expanding too much or tasting and smelling a bit sour, with an almost alcoholic aftertaste (the yeast produces alcohol as it ferments).

How long to cook pizza dough at 450? ›

At 450°F, the same thin crust can be done in 8-12 minutes. For a thick-crust pizza, it takes 18-25 minutes at 400°F and 14-20 minutes at 450°F. So when increasing the temperature by 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the cooking time can be reduced by 2-5 minutes depending on crust thickness.

How long to cook pizza dough at 350? ›

Lightly flour a rolling pin, and the surface on which you are opening the dough. Use the rolling pin to stretch the dough out to desired shape. * Bake pizza at 350 degrees; usually cooks in about 20 minutes.

What can you add to pizza dough to make it better? ›

If you're keen to intensify its flavor even more, enhance the dough further – either with infused oil brushed over top, cheese woven into its edges or a combination of herbs and spices kneaded into it or sprinkled on it.

How do you make pizza dough rise better? ›

Pizza dough loves warmth, so if you can find a way to add some extra heat, your dough will rise faster. One way to do this is to preheat your oven to the lowest setting (usually around 200 degrees Fahrenheit) and then turn it off. Place your pizza dough in the warm oven for 10-15 minutes until it begins to rise.

How do you get the most flavor out of pizza dough? ›

Add sugar and oil to the dough

So what two ingredients set New York-style pizza crust apart? It's a combination of oil and sugar that gets added to the usual suspects of flour, yeast, water, and salt. When oil is added to pizza dough, it adds flavor, but more importantly, it coats individual grains of flour.
