What are Expeditions?

According to Bethesda, Expeditions are “story driven, repeatable missions to various exciting locales in the Fallout universe”. The first content of this kind will be The Pitt. As Fallout 76 Project Lead Jeff Gardiner said in a round table interview, the decision to visit Pittsburgh first was made, because “it is local to West Virginia and it’s a great narrative location”.

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun back in December 2020, Gardiner stated, that the team has “a big list of locations” and that they are “looking at those to be the ways for people to experience different areas of the Fallout universe”.

The Pitt Release Date

Update: Expeditions: The Pitt was released on September 13, 2022. Here you’ll find the full The Pitt Update Notes.

Bethesda hasn’t set an exact release date for Expeditions: The Pitt yet. At E3 2021 and in the first teaser, it was announced that the update will be published in 2022.

According to the official Fallout 76 2022 Roadmap, The Pitt will be released in September 2022. As long the next seasons will still run around 3 months, it is likely that the update will hit the servers sometime during September.

How to Start an Expedition

  • Visit the Whitespring Refuge (at the Whitespring Resort) to meet members of the Responders team, and to complete the new “Responders Reborn” quest.
  • In order to kick off an Expedition, you will need to make the Vertibird flight-ready by charging its Ultracite Battery Cell (Ultracell).
  • After completing the “Responders Reborn” quest, you can visit the Whitespring Refuge every day to automatically start 3 different Refuge Daily Quests.
  • Complete all 3 of your quests for the day, and you will earn enough to charge the Vertibird’s battery up to 100%, which will enable you to lead an Expedition.
  • For playtesting purposes in the PTS, you can lead multiple Expeditions per day. Once Expeditions arrive in the live version of the game, players will be able to lead one Expedition per day.
  • Once you’ve fully charged the Vertibird’s Ultracite Battery Cell, open the Map and click the Expeditions icon to view which Missions are currently available for play.

Expedition Rewards

  • As you play through a Mission, you will receive 3 randomized objectives from the current pool of 9, which will help keep your experiences feeling fresh from one playthrough to the next.
  • In addition, you will receive three optional objectives that you can complete along the way.
  • Whenever you complete a Mission, you will earn XP, some loot, and a legendary item.
  • Once per week, completing a Mission will earn a random item from the pool of rare Expeditions-themed rewards.
  • You will also receive some S.C.O.R.E. to help you rank-up during your Season journey.
  • With the arrival of Expeditions and The Pitt, the Auto-Axe automatic melee weapon and Union Power Armor are introduced.
  • On the end-of-Mission screen, you will also notice a new currency, called “Stamps.”
  • You will earn Stamps every time you complete a Mission, and completing optional objectives will increase the number of Stamps you receive.
  • Bring your Stamps to Giuseppe, a new vendor at The Whitespring Refuge, to exchange them for specific rare Expeditions-themed items that you’d like to add to your collection.

The Pitt Gameplay [Video Analysis]

Not much is known about the gameplay of The Pitt yet. Gardiner said at the round table that The Pitt “has got really unique mechanics, a really cool story and repeatable content”. Mark Tucker, Design Director for Fallout 76, highlighted that it will also be accessible for those who like to play and experience content solo.

Thanks to the details Bethesda already published and the old content in Fallout 3 there are a few more things that can be distilled. Marta aka InnovSurvivalist over on YouTube made a list with things we know or at least can guess so far:

  1. The Pitt will take place 174 years before Fallout 3. Therefore The Pitt will be a much different city and the people, the enemies and the flora will certainly not be the same.
  2. Players will most certainly travel to The Pitt by Vertibird. One of this Fallout helicopters is shown extensively in the teaser trailer. In the Fallout 4 DLC Far Harbour, a boat was used to bring players to a new area. In the RPG interview Gardiner likens expeditions to Expansions like Far Harbour saying that “those are some of our most successful expansions for our previous games and we want to be able to bring that experience to Fallout 76 for certain”.
  3. The Brotherhood of Steel is most likely going to be behind the new expedition.
    • According to InnovSurvivalist none of the other factions has a reason to go there. Furthermore Fort Atlas already features a landing place which currently doesn’t have any use (yet).
    • The Expedition squad (“Delta”) in the trailer consists of 4 members. Three of them seem to be injured or worse, one is trying to make contact. All of them are wearing military gear and guns and one of them is from the Brotherhood of Steel (according to his clothing). In the Fallout history, the Brotherhood of Steel nearly wiped out the population of The Pitt in 2255. So this expedition could be the start of something bigger and maybe connect with the known history.
  4. The Pitt will be highly irradiated since several warheads landed near the city. The high radiation level can also be heard in the trailer. To savely explore the new map, the proper equipment will be necessary.
  5. The environment will be hazardous in every way. As already announced by Bethesda, The Pitt is dominated by “mutated monstrosities and other treats”. Possibly, there will be new enemies. Aditionally to the high raditation there’s also concentrated pollution caused by the old steel mills in the Pittsburgh area. So a lot of potential for new monsters.
  6. Expeditions: The Pitt will be a complete new map. It’s an open world map with plenty of story, NPCs and places to explore.
  7. The Pitt will deliver an open world experience. You can expect a new map with total freedom to do as you please. No linear game design.
  8. Local gangs of Raiders and Settlers started rebuilding The Pitt after the nukes. Many others decided to leave. Some of the locals finally ended up in Appalachia where they formed Foundation. So some of the Foundation settlers may have valuable intel.
  9. Raider groups started fighting for control over The Pitt. They started to enslave survivors. So we may see enslaved workers in The Pitt
  10. The city map shouldn’t have changed much from pre-war. Most of the important areas should still be there like the Steelyard, the bridge, downton, uptown and the Underground.
  11. The Pitt will be the first of many Expeditions. This kind of content gives Bethesda a tool to provide a lot of different locations over time.
  12. The Pitt is a free update. This was already confirmed by Bethesda in the description of the teaser video.

Expeditions: The Pitt (New MAP🗺️ for 2022) - 12 Things We Know So Far! | Fallout 76

Naked Vault Dweller also made a video analyzing the teaser trailer. In addition to stuff that was already mentioned by InnovSurvivalist, he and his audience noticed some more things:

  • The pilot is calling out to Delta squad but on the Pip-Boy on the arm, that is dragged away, you can read “Expedition leader Bravo”. Will there be multiple squads within The Pitt that can coordinate with one another?
  • The person being dragged away is wearing a Pip-Boy on the right arm (not the left one as usual). Also, are there any people alive you’ve met in Fallout 76 wearing a Pip-Boy? E.g. Samuel in Foundation is from a vault but is not wearing one.
  • Naked Vault Dweller thinks that the person may be dragged away by a Trog. Trogs are humans who have been infected with TDC (Troglodyte Degeneration Contagion) in the Fallout 3 DLC The Pitt. InnovSurvivalist however thinks that the diseases that later inflicted the population, like TDC, didn’t exist right after the nukes fell. Therefore it would be unlike that a Trog already existed when Expeditions: The Pitt takes place.
  • At the end of the teaser you can see two smokestacks with smoke coming out of them. So somebody has to be working the furnaces. According to lore, slaves were doing this work, supervised by Pitt Raiders.

Expeditions Gameplay [January 2022 Datamine]

In the PTS files of the Invaders from Beyond update data miners found the first details and menus for the upcoming Expedition. Here’s a summary of the things they found out.

Credits to Gearsthecool (and also waster1993) for datamining this stuff and posting their findings on Reddit!

How to get to Expeditions?

There were several clues found in the files regarding how to get to Expeditions. The first one is this menu widget:

Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (41)

This widget opens a menu where an Expedition can be chosen from. Also, it shows if any of your friends is in Expeditions, so you’ll be able to join them. The menu will show what stage of the Expedition they’re in (Planning, Playing, or Ending).

The menu that is opened by the widget is the “Select an Expedition”. It shows that there will be multiple Expeditions (or at least multiple missions).

Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (42)

For the specific Expedition, location details, the district, the recommended level, and the contact are shown.

Additionally, there’s the description for “Union Dues”: “The Union has made contact with our local Responders in Appalachia. They’ve got hostile forces holed up in a Firehouse nearby that they can’t dig otut, and a Foundry full of troublemakers that need some reclamation. There’s rumors of other weird creatures making problems as well. Report to Hex for more info once you arrive”.

This is what we can learn (or assume) from this menu according to Gearsthecool:

  • The Pitt is likely to be multiple maps we visit over the course of different missions.
  • The level indicates we may see intentionally harder missions.
  • The contact shows that we may have missions in the same location and district with different objectives.
  • Missions will be multi-objective. It seems this (likely tutorial) expedition has 2-3 objectives.

Additionally, Fuel Quests were discovered in the PTS files. The objective of these quests is to collect fuel. This fuel will presumably be needed for the Vertibird that will transport us to The Pitt.

Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (43)

Gearsthecool’s guess is, that we will be doing Expeditions weekly: “While nothing can be concretely said on the rate of getting these quests/what they entail, I would suspect that we’ll be doing Expeditions weekly barring joining friend’s expeditions, which going purely off UI code look for a different state than starting your own expedition.”

Who are The Union and Hex?

“The Union has made contact with our local Responders in Appalachia”. It is unclear, whether there will be some Responders returning or maybe the Union just made contact through the automated systems the Responders left behind.

“The Union” seems to be a group in the Pitt who aren’t evil raiders, according to Gearthecool. Maybe this group has links to the existing Settlers who fled from there. Paige also was head of the Construction Workers Union pre-war, so this may be another clue.

Hex is the contact at least for the “Union Dues” mission. Hex is female as discovered in the code.

What else was discovered?

Based on discovered code, Gearthecool and waster1993 made these assumptions:

  • Expeditions appear to have pause functionality, as there’s code referencing “resuming” them.
  • Expeditions appear to involve Whitesprings, specifically as a place we may want to FT to through the Expedition widget. This could mean a lot of things, but I (and probably a lot of you) am hoping that it means we finally see WS get a purpose as a kind of Expedition hub. It might be where we get fuel quests, for instance.
  • There’s a completion screen, but it doesn’t really show anything of use.
Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (44)
  • There’s a new set of icons that don’t have any apparent use, but are used for some kind of quest tracking. Key, Bomb, Metal Bar, Jar, Gear, Battery, Chem, and Hazard in that order.
Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (45)
  • (Credit to SugarBombs.RADS on discord for finding this) This appears to be a map marker of some kind, though it’s hard to discern how it’s used. The art is nice, though.

Expeditions Gameplay [March 2022 Datamine]

In the PTS files for the Test Your Metal update several new details were discovered regarding Expeditions: The Pitt.

Whitespring Resort & Ultracite Batteries

This is the Expeditions banner found in the game files:

Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (47)

It tells us:

  • Vertibirds are standing by at the Whitesprings Resort for travel to Expedition locations outside Appalachia.
  • Vertibird travel requires fully charged Ultracite batteries. Batteries are filled by completing daily Fuel Quests.
  • Team leaders can assemble groups and use the map to begin a new Expedition. Teams may return to Appalachia and resume the same Expedition at any time.

What is also known now:

  • The Fuel Quests will be happening at the Monongah Power Plant.
  • The Whitesprings Resort will be the center of the new Expeditions feature.
  • Players will be able to explore the new mission locations even after completing objectives.
  • Expeditions can be paused and resumed.
  • It seems like players will be able to change their builds at the start of each expedition.
  • The Pitt might feature several missions.
  • There will be a new public team option for Expeditions with a new background.

New Expeditions Currency

The new Expeditions system will get its own currency which should extend beyond The Pitt.

  • No name yet, but it has a Vertibird logo.
  • You will earn it for every completed expedition.
  • It is likely that there will be a new vendor where you can exchange the Expeditions currency (maybe at Whitesprings Resort).

A more fully realized Expeditions Post-Match interface element was found in the game files:

Fallout 76 Expeditions: The Pitt - Release & All Details [Last Updated: November 2023 ] (50)

This element confirms that rewards are based on objective completion. According to Gearsthecool on Reddit, this might indicate that “instead of pure RNG for rewards, Expeditions just pay out this currency to allow players to unlock what rewards they want”.

Season 9 Items Related to The Pitt

Two Season 9 rewards are related to The Pitt.

  • The description of the Patrioteer outfit mentions the Union: “Show your support for the Union with this Patrioteer Outfit!”
  • The description of the Super Sledge Skin mentions the Union: “Take down those goody-goody Union representatives with the Union Buster Supersledge Paint!”
  • The texture’s file names mention the Fanatics (group of (presumed) Raiders that the Hellcats dealt with previously according to Steel Reign dialogue).

Thanks to Gearsthecool on Reddit an InnovSurvivalist on YouTube for collecting and presenting all this new information.
