Why Real Leather?

Our number 1 tip: Ensure that you choose either a full grain satchel or a top grain satchel.

Our satchels are made with real full grain and top grain buffalo and cowhide leather. Which are very strong and rugged materials. Real leather combined with expert craftsmanship is extremely durable.

Our men’s satchels use the very top layer of the hide and will last the longest. Similar designs made with PU leather, genuine leather or faux leather will break down faster. Suede leather or nubuck leather is a better alternative.

It is important to note that no type of leather is fully water resistant. So keep them out of heavy rainfall wherever possible. If you are looking for a satchel bag that is built to stand the test of time, full grain or top grain are the only choices.

Satchel Styles

Full flap satchels

These are an increasingly common type of satchel that you'll see many of on this page. These will hide any buckles, zippers and fasteners and can be considered the modern style for many men. You can really show off a quality leather with these long pieces of uninterrupted hide. Flapped satchels are really easy to get into when you are on the move.

You can very easily open the flap and access your devices or papers when you are commuting and get five minutes to finish up that essay. This ease of access can mean they are slightly less secure than a buckled equivalent. However, to overcome this we'd recommend making sure your bag has two methods of entry. The primary being a flap, the secondary being a zipper.

Messengers

This is the catch all term for large satchels that do not have full flaps, but are also not briefcases. These usually come in a vintage style with plenty of buckles, fasteners and zips. Think Indiana Jones or your college professor for these bags. They are usually top handle bags, but you will want one with a shoulder strap for those longer commutes.

These shoulder bags usually come in a rich shade of brown or black. But other colors are available such as red, grey and coffee. And they are crafted for functionality and versatility to be able to easily able to hold a load of gear.

Handbags

These are designed more as women’s satchel bags and are sometimes called tote bags. Handbags are great for storing all you need for the day in a stylish smooth leather bag. They are made from one smooth long piece of leather. And they can come with a zip top to keep your goods secure. Tassels can be a fun extra.

Handbags are a new arrival for The Real Leather Company and currently in low stock.

1. Can leather satchels get wet?

Leather satchels generally have water resistance, but are not fully waterproof. Real leather has some natural water resistance, but excessive exposure to moisture can still cause damage.

Wherever possible, avoid damp or moisture on your leather bag. We know this is not always possible. So if your bag does get wet, here's what to do.

If you spill something on it, blot away the moisture with a clean dry cloth.

Caught in a rainstorm? Let your leather bag completely air dry. Do not use a heat source to speed up the drying as this can damage the leather. Stuff the bag with newspaper to help the bag keep its shape. This also helps to absorb moisture from the inside.

Taking proper care and precautions will help maintain the quality and longevity of your satchel.an airplane.

If you are unsure whether it’s the right size, go to the product page. Check the section that says specs. You’ll then be given the exact dimensions. Check these against approved TSA dimensions. If flying overseas, contact the airline for their approved dimensions.

2. How do I clean my leather satchel?

Treating a real leather satchel handbag with care can extend its life by years.

We recommend the following to care for your satchel:

Always wash your hands before caring for leather. Oil from your hands can easily transfer to leather hide.

Once a week, we recommend getting a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth. Then briskly sweep the leather. Don't forget the inside too! Use a cloth to wipe down the lining and remove any dirt or residue.

Use a good leather cream or conditioner once or twice per year. This will prevent your bag becoming dry or cracked. If you live in a dryer climate, you may need to do this more often.

Simply apply the cream to the entire bag with a cloth and rub off any excess. We recommend using our all natural leather cream found in our store for our bags.

Be sure to take the time to care properly for your leather. If you do, your bag can have a good, long life.
