Tom Segura
Tom Segura is a writer, comedian, and actor. He was born on April 16, 1979 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Thomas Nadeau Segura and Rosario “Charo” Lazarte (a Peruvian immigrant). His dad was a First Vice President of Merrill Lynch. He has lived in Los Angeles, California; Mequon, Wisconsin; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Vero Beach, Florida. He has two sisters named Maria and Jane, and he’s related to Andrew D. Huberman (the podcast host and neurobiologist).

Tom grew up speaking Spanish and spent summers in Lima, Peru. He graduated from Saint Edward’s School in Vero Beach, Florida, and from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. At the age of 19, he overdosed on GHB and fell into a short coma.

Shortly after graduating from college, he started doing stand up. He would do comedy in the evenings for the first few years as he held down daytime jobs. He interned at Kopelson Entertainment and then had his first paid job in the industry, working as a logger, producing transcripts of reality shows like “My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss” and “Extreme Makeover”.

He has performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Global Comedy Festival in Vancouver, The Comedy Festival, and Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. Tom is one of the top selling touring acts in the world, having sold hundreds of thousands of tickets on multiple international tours. He was also a San Francisco regional finalist on Last Comic Standing 2. Tom has been a frequent guest on The Joe Rogan Experience, with his first appearance being on episode 8 of the podcast.

Tom is best known for his Netflix specials “Completely Normal”, “Mostly Stories”, “Disgraceful”, “Ball Hog”, and “Sledgehammer”, which debuted at #1 on Netflix when it dropped on July 4, 2023.

His TV credits include: Conan, Happy Endings, Workaholics, The Late Late Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central Presents: Tom Segura, How To Be A Grown Up, and Mash Up. He has also appeared in movies such as “Countdown”, “Opening Act”, “Instant Family”, and “Flinch”.

He is married to Christina Pazisitzky (a fellow comedian), since 2008, and their two sons live in Austin, Texas.

Tom and Christina began doing their podcast, “Your Mom’s House” in 2010, which they both host.

They landed a TV deal with CBS, who gave “The Little Things” (their show) a pilot production commitment.

When he is not recording a podcast or performing on stage somewhere, he is watching college football or waiting for college football to return.

“I’d Like To Play Alone, Please: Essays” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2022. From a hugely successful standup comedian and co-host of the chart topping podcasts “Your Mom’s House” and “2 Bears 1 Cave”, hilarious real life stories about youthful mistakes, celebrity encounters, parenting, misanthropy, and so many more.

Tom Segura is well known for his irreverent comedic voice and twisted takes. However after a few years of churning podcasts out weekly and crazy tours, all as he parents two young kids, he needs a second to himself. It is not that he hates his family and friends (he isn’t a monster) he is just beat, which is why his son’s (ruthless) first full sentence, “I’d like to play alone, please”, has since become his mantra.

Tom, in this collection of stories, combines his signature curmudgeonly humor with a revealing look at a few of the ridiculous situations which shaped him and the ludicrous characters that always appear to seek him out. The stories feature some hilarious anecdotes about Tom’s time on the road, including some surreal encounters with celebrities at airports; the trials and tribulations of parenting kids with bizarrely morbid interests; his unfiltered South American family; and perhaps most memorably, experiences with his dad that, like any good Baby Boomer dad, loves talking about his bowel movements and sharing graphic Vietnam stories at inappropriate moments. All of which is enough to make anybody want a bit of quiet and peace.

This will have readers laughing out loud and nodding along in agreement with Segura in a world where everybody is increasingly insane, sometimes you really just need to be left alone.

According to Tom, the book is not an autobiography, but a collection of stories, which is an extension of what he does as a comedian, which is tell a lot of stories.

“I’d Like To Play Alone, Please: Essays” was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award for Best Humor in 2022 and was a #2 New York Times Bestseller.

Tom has delivered a laugh out loud read and he’s got a natural and capable storytelling ability, one which lifts his narratives out of average anecdote fare and plants them right into hilarious territory. This is a quick read, since you will not want to put it down, and even if you have heard the stories before, they are still fun to read in the book.

Readers saved the book for days or moments they were feeling especially down, and it never failed to cheer them up and get them laughing. Fans were especially touched by the dedication to Tom’s dad, who he talks about with such love and humor. People found the section on parenting to be totally relatable, and you get to learn quite a bit about his life before he became a comedian.

The book is filled with your stereotypically masculine read with farts and football that occasionally gets interrupted by totally heartfelt and disarming sentiments. Then followed by another poop joke. It is a surprising, funny, and even sweet at times read. His candor is undeniably entertaining and while often crude, it’s still very humorous. For those looking to live inside of the mind of one of the best comics out there, this is your chance. It is also just as thought provoking as it is timely.

Tom’s quick wit and irreverent charm come across loud and clear in this book, which reads like a stand up set that is deserving of a standing ovation. Even readers who aren’t a fan of Tom’s found some enjoyment in reading this essay collection.
